We use this extremely hard wear-resistant material in a variety of ways for tool fabrication. This alloy is ideal for certain wear and cutting application. However, it is not recommended for the machining of hardened steel, 45 Rc and up.
PCD Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) is extremely hard and highly resistant to abrasion. It is a synthetic product that is similar to natural forming diamond.
In the tooling industry PCD is ideal for machining of abrasive materials such as aluminum, copper alloys, and reinforced epoxies. PCD is not recommended for the machining of iron and steel or any ferrous material.
CBN Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) is the second hardest material known. CBN has a higher thermal and chemical stability than diamond. This stability makes it ideal for the machining of hardened steel and iron. In many cases machining with CBN can replace grinding while maintaining the same tolerances and surface finish.
